I should start by saying I have an odd obsession with both murder documentaries and the paranormal, but had never heard of Elisa Lam, so going into this docuseries, I had no predisposed thoughts on the matter. I came away with the understanding of two very firm opinions: Elisa Lam was failed terribly by those around her. Mental health is a difficult thing to navigate, and no evaluation should be done by people who are untrained. The excuse that "her symptoms were not bad enough to warrant help" as said by the manager of the Cecil Hotel was awful. And I was aghast with how uninformed the "Internet sleuths" were in this case. Some need for this to be a grisly case, neatly wrapped and shrouded in mystery allowed them to act with their shields of anonymity from behind a screen to destroy the life of an innocent. This was far more malicious and terrifying than anything else I witnessed in this series. They turned away from evidence to pursue falsehoods and in doing so were permitted to ruin the livelihood of an artist. I am so sorry for everything you endured, the only positive takeaway I have found in this is that I discovered your music and this platform. Both your music and the aesthetic of your alterego are amazing, and I hope that if nothing else now you can be showered with the support that you should have had back then. Having spent my youth being bullied, I know how damaging it can be to the psyche, and I only hope now that the love and positivity will come flooding into your life so that you can heal from what was evidently a horrific experience. I look forward to hearing about paranormal experiences that you had too, I have my own and so I'm open minded and love to hear people's own incidents.
